Justice Ministers meet ahead of Council

On 9 June, ahead of their Council of the EU meeting in Luxembourg, the Belgian, French and German Justice Ministers engaged in a fruitful discussion with European Commissioner of Justice Didier Reynders for the second time this year. Katalin Cseh MEP chaired this meeting, where participants discussed the fight against impunity in Ukraine, the EU child strategy, e-evidence and hate crime.

Luxembourg’s liberals elect new leadership ahead of 2023 electoral year

The national Congress of Luxembourg’s Demokratesch Partei (DP) voted for new party leadership on 12 June. Lex Delles was elected as new party leader with 98.95% of the votes. The new party leadership includes Max Hahn as first Vice-President as well as Marc Hansen and Claude Lamberty as second Vice-Presidents, and Myriam Feyder as treasurer.

Finnish liberals present economic plan

During their weekend Congress, one of ALDE Party’s member parties in Finland, Keskusta, presented its plan to set up special economic zones in Eastern Finland to compensate for economic losses suffered in the aftermath of the border closure with Russia. Both ALDE Party Co-Presidents, Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP and Senator Timmy Dooley, addressed the Congress.

VVD members gather for General Members’ Assembly

On 11 June, ALDE Party member VVD hosted their General Members’ Assembly Meeting in Amsterdam. The Assembly kicked off with a tribute to late ALDE Party President and former MEP Hans van Baalen. VVD members also voted on motions calling for a change of the speed limit on roads to 130 km/h, more dialogue on the influx of asylum seekers, careful nitrogen policy and a plan on climate, among other topics.

Tourism recovery builds on sustainability

Sustainable tourism was the topic of a conference organised by the European Committee of the Regions’ NAT Commission in Santiago de Compostela, Spain on 3 June. Tourism is slowly recovering to pre-COVID levels, and has accelerated the transition to a more sustainable model of tourism, as promoted by Manuel Alejandro Cardenete, Regional Minister for Education and Sport in Andalusia.

Welcome to our new Engagement Unit Trainee

Earlier this month, we welcomed Ioana Pavel to the ALDE Party Secretariat. Ioana started her traineeship at the Engagement Unit by supporting the ALDE Party Congress in Dublin and will continue to work with the Engagement Unit on campaigns. Historic moment as European Parliament calls for treaty reform

Last week, a historic moment for the European Union took place, with the European Parliament calling for a Convention to reform our EU treaties. Renew Europe Group welcomed the plenary vote and this strong message from the European Parliament. Reforming our Union, based on the Conference on the Future of Europe and the will of European citizens, is a priority for Renew Europe.

Renew Europe: Amend EU Treaties to include the right to abortion

The draft opinion from the US Supreme Court aiming to overturn Roe v. Wade, which established the constitutional right to abortion in the US, is part of a global anti-women trend that is spreading in Europe. In a resolution adopted by the European Parliament last week, Renew Europe highlighted why the legal protection of the right to abortion must be enshrined in the EU Treaties.
