The ALDE Party Congress took place on 11-12 June, with hundreds of participants meeting online to discuss some of the most defining challenges of our time. The Congress opened with a tribute to late ALDE President Hans van Baalen, followed by a Council meeting which included a special segment on the Conference on the Future of Europe. Two insightful panels brought together liberal leaders to discuss Europe’s economic recovery and strengthening our democracies. Moreover, during the Congress a number of resolutions were adopted, and three Vice Presidents and one Treasurer elected to the ALDE Party Bureau.

ALDE Party sets vision on key topics

During the ALDE eCongress, delegates voted and adopted a range of resolutions covering topical issues including the post-COVID economic recovery; lessons learned from the pandemic and the Conference on the Future of Europe; climate change; and key geostrategic issues of the moment notably Belarus, Ukraine and the Northern Ireland protocol.

Liberals unite against Hungarian anti-LGBTIQ+ legislation

This week, the Hungarian Parliament passed a new law that further limits the freedoms of LGBTIQ+ individuals and education in Hungary. ALDE Party and our Hungarian members Momentum Mozgalom and Liberálisok have taken a stand to express our disgrace over this with a petition that has gathered over 3,000 signatures.

Finnish ALDE Party members run in municipal elections

Finnish ALDE Party members Keskusta and Svenska Folkpartiet i Finland (SFP) ran in the country’s municipal election last Sunday 13 June. With a record-low voter turnout of just 55.1%, Keskusta received 14.9% of the vote, securing its position as the third largest party at municipal level. SFP gained 5.0% of the vote, maintaining its presence in big cities and securing additional seats in many municipalities.

Belgian liberals celebrate 175 years

The Belgian liberal party was founded in Brussels City Hall on 14 June 1846, making it the oldest political party of the European continent. To mark the occasion, Open VLD President Egbert Lachaert and MR President Georges-Louis Bouchez organised an event this week in the same room where the founding of the party took place.

Liberal Mayors play a key role in eradicating LGBTIQ+ phobia

The Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions reaffirmed this crucial role at the ALDE Party Congress with a resolution on the topic, and calls on all Liberal Mayors and ALDE representatives to demonstrate the benefits of inclusiveness and embracing diversity as recipes for success. Renew Europe CoR believes that Mayors and regional presidents can set the tone of inclusiveness in their municipalities and regions.

Liberal response to Commission’s lessons learned from COVID-19

On 15 June, the European Commission presented an early communication on the lessons learned from the pandemic. The communication includes 10 lessons and recommendations to make Europe stronger and continue to lead on the global health scale. Europe’s liberals welcome this communication but call the Commission to keep other ambitious proposals in mind.

ALDE and IRI Roundtable - The Transatlantic Partnership

On June 29, the ALDE Party and the International Republican Institute (IRI) will hold a closed-doors roundtable for members and representatives of political parties from the European liberal family. The event will examine the opportunities under the new Biden administration for the US and Europe to chart a common path in rebalancing the trading relationship with China, address the impact of distortive trade practices and safeguard the respect for human rights, social and environmental protections. Registration is open until 25 June 2021.

Job vacancy: (Junior) Data Analyst

The ALDE Party is looking for a (Junior) Data Analyst to join its Research and Empowerment Unit. The chosen candidate will conduct research and analysis on political party performance, manage data analysis projects, develop ALDE Party analytics databases and assist the organisation of workshops, among other tasks. EU recovery plans must prioritise reforms, investments and rule of law

Last week, the European Parliament adopted a Resolution on the European Commission’s assessment of national recovery plans. The messages of the resolution are clear and reflect Renew Europe’s priorities on reforms, investments and the rule of law, in addition to the green and digital transitions.
