4 months after the beginning of the Russian invasion, the EU accepted Ukraine and Moldova’s application to become candidates for EU membership, showing its support for the invaded country even further. ALDE Party Vice President Kira Rudik, welcomed the EU Council’s decision in Brussels, where she spent two days meeting liberal leaders and furthering Ukraine’s cause.

Our leaders show unity for a stronger Europe

On 23 June, ahead of the European Council, Heads of State and government, European Commissioners and liberal and democrat party leaders met in Brussels to discuss the geopolitical, economic and environmental future of Europe at the first-ever Renew Europe Leaders Meeting.

UK liberals achieve historic victory in Tiverton and Honiton

After the resignation of two conservative MPs, two by-elections were held in the UK last week. The Tories lost both. The Liberal Democrats, one of ALDE Party’s member parties in the UK, won the seat of Tiverton and Honiton, a rural constituency in Devon that for 99 years has been represented by a Tory MP. With almost 30% of the votes changing sides, this is one of the largest bu=y-election swings in British Parliamentary history.

We need help to reconstruct Ukraine, claims Mayor Yuri Bova

Yuri Bova, leader of Ukrainian ALDE Party member party Syla Lyudey and Mayor of Trostyanets, Ukraine, participated in the Renew Europe Group’s Roundtable on the Eastern Partnership on 22 June. In his speech he told how his municipality, the first one to be invaded by Russian troops last February, has been affected by the war, what his plans for reconstruction are and asked for help from European leaders.

We bring together politicians and companies for Europe’s digital future

On 22 June, ALDE Party held a reception where liberal politicians touched base on digital policy with members of the corporate world. The evening included speeches from Vice-Presidents of the ALDE Party Dita Charanzová MEP and Svenja Hahn MEP, and Kostas Rossoglou, Head of Public Policy and Government Affairs Europe for Shopify and Erzsebet Fitori, Group Head of EU Affairs and Relations at Vodafone Group.

Kate Feeney promotes youth and local democracy

Earlier this month, Councillor Kate Feeney, Renew Europe CoR’s spokesperson on Social Affairs, joined Ireland’s Minister of State for EU Affairs Thomas Byrne and European Committee of the Regions President Tzitzikostas in Dublin to discuss the role of youth and democracy in Europe, together with the European Movement Ireland and the Irish regions European office.

European Health Emergency Plan: Deal prepares for cross-border health threats

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomed last week’s interinstitutional agreement on the regulation on serious cross-border health threats. With this deal, an important milestone is being set towards a genuine European Health Union, and Europe will be able to react swiftly and appropriately to cross-border health threats, whether infectious, environmental, food-borne, biological or chemical.

Recovery and Resilience Facility builds a stronger EU, with lessons to be learned

In July 2020, the EU institutions agreed on a European recovery plan to respond to the economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Renew Europe believes that the Recovery and Resilience Facility has proved its effectiveness, supporting economic convergence between EU Member States and enabling the financing of strategic cross-border projects with European added value. However, important challenges remain.
