Statement by the ALDE Party Bureau on the situation in Russia

Last week ahead of the European Council meeting, the ALDE Party Bureau issued a statement on Russia, affirming unwavering commitment to democracy and free elections, calling for immediate release of all political prisoners and welcoming the EU strategy on Russia.

Liberal leaders meet at Pre-Summit ahead of EUCO

Ahead of the European Council Meeting of 24-25 June, liberal leaders from across Europe came together to discuss key topics such as the COVID-19 crisis, economic recovery, migration and Russia. ALDE Party acting co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP joined the pre-summit with a short video statement issued after the meeting.

ALDE/IRI roundtable takes a look at transatlantic partnership and China

On 29 June, the ALDE Party and the International Republican Institute (IRI) hosted an online roundtable. The event examined opportunities under the new Biden administration for the US and Europe to chart a common path in rebalancing the trading relationship with China, address the impact of distortive trade practices and safeguard the respect for human rights, and social and environmental protection.

The new Andalusian way: building a quality government, tackling corruption

This op-ed published by the Renew Europe CoR highlights the progress Spanish liberals have made since entering Andalusia’s government in 2018. A region whose previous government was at the heart of the largest corruption case in Spanish history now has a law that will prevent people indicted or convicted of corruption or who have bank accounts in tax havens from holding public office. With this law, Spanish liberals in Andalusia are taking the lead in restoring good governance.

Job vacancy: Policy Development Adviser

The ALDE Party is looking for a Policy Development Adviser to join the Policy & Membership Affairs Unit. The chosen candidate will support the work of the Bureau’s policy Advisory Group on Democracy & Security, lead the political monitoring for selected European countries and contribute to the development of a narrative and manifesto ahead of the EP elections in 2024, among other things. Applications are open until 17 July.

Coming up this month - July

In this monthly series, we share some key updates on what’s happening in liberal politics, in Brussels and beyond. In July, liberal leaders will participate in different events and present a series of initiatives dealing with key issues such as rule of law or gender-based violence. Meanwhile, member parties will also host events, such as national congresses, and participate in national elections, among others.

Orbán's €7bn recovery plan should be withheld, demand Renew Europe MEPs

Renew Europe MEPs have written to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to urge her not to approve the Hungarian government’s recovery plan until an effective anti-fraud system is put in place. This is to ensure that the €7 billion in recovery funds to Hungary will benefit all Hungarians, and not a few politically connected ones.

Renew Europe welcomes step to transform EASO into a full-fledged EU Asylum Agency

On 29 June, an agreement was reached between the European Parliament and the European Council on the new EU Asylum Agency (EUAA). The new hybrid agency will play a vital role in implementing the Common European Asylum System, a step welcomed by Renew Europe.
