Kallas nominated EU's foreign policy chief

On 27 June, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas was nominated to become High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. During a European Council summit in Brussels, the Estonian Reform Party leader received broad backing from EU heads of state or government to take on this highly influential EU position.

Rutte appointed NATO Secretary General

On 26 June, the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Mark Rutte as the next NATO Secretary General, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg as of 1 October at a meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Rutte, who served as Dutch Prime Minister from 2010 to 2024 and as leader of ALDE Party member VVD from 2006 to 2023, said he looked forward to taking up the job "with great vigour".

Liberal leaders meet ahead of EUCO

Ahead of the European Council Meeting on 27-28 June, liberal leaders from across Europe came together in Brussels to discuss key topics, including the future of the European Union following the recent European elections. ALDE Party co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP joined the Pre-Summit meeting.

Lasconi elected new USR President

On 26 June, ALDE Party member USR in Romania elected Elena Lasconi as its new President, succeeding Cătălin Drulă after two years in office. Lasconi received 68.14% of votes from USR members at the party’s extraordinary Congress, prevailing over Cristian Seidler (16.57%), Radu Hossu (12.54%), and Gabriel Filip (2.74%).

Rainbow Platform takes part in Europride

On 28 June, Rainbow Platform ambassadors Anna Júlia Donáth and Ana Vasconcelos Martins MEP represented liberals at the 2024 Europride in Thessaloniki, Greece. In partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, ALDE Party was one of the European political parties and affiliated LGBT networks to host a seminar and networking event for Europride attendees.
