Liberals deliver record result in UK general election

On 4 July, the United Kingdom held a general election to elect all 650 members of the House of Commons. The Liberal Democrats won 72 seats, a new record high number of seats, increasing their representation by 64 MPs and becoming the third largest party in the House of Commons. Meanwhile, the Alliance Party elected Sorcha Eastwood as its first MP in the Lagan Valley consistuency.

Momentum elect Tompos as new leader

On 7 July, Momentum Mozgalom elected Márton Tompos as its new President, succeeding Anna Donáth. Tompos, who co-founded Momentum in 2017 and already served as its Vice-President, is a Member of the National Assembly since 2022 and also the party’s deputy parliamentary leader. An assembly of party members also agreed to elect a seven-strong leadership cohort.

Portuguese liberals adopt new programme at Congress

On 5-7 July, ALDE Party member Iniciativa Liberal hosted its 8th party Congress in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. Under the motto “always growing”, Portuguese liberals gathered for the first time since the success in the European elections, when the party elected its first two Members of the European Parliament in João Cotrim de Figueiredo MEP and Ana Vasconcelos Martins MEP.

Alliance Of Her Academy kicks off for 2024

On 4-7 July, 21 ambitious women from 17 countries across Europe came together to begin their journey through The Alliance Of Her Academy. The first session at Domaine de Ronchinne, Belgium, saw the participation of ALDE Party Vice-President Kira Rudik MP and 2022 alumnae Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle MEP and Anna Stürgkh MEP, recently elected to the European Parliament.

Renew Europe grows stronger with Irish MEPs

Renew Europe welcomed Michael McNamara MEP and Ciaran Mullooly MEP in its ranks as new Members of the European Parliament, taking the group of liberal, centrist and democrat members to 77. McNamara is a widely regarded barrister who has worked at the OSCE and as a Teachta Dála for Clare following the 2020 general election, and previously from 2011 to 2016.
