Liberals at NATO Summit reaffirm Ukraine support

On 11-12 July, liberal leaders from across Europe attended the NATO Summit in Vilnius to discuss Putin’s ongoing war in Ukraine and the future confirmation of Sweden’s accession to NATO. Allies agreed that Ukraine’s future is in NATO and they will be in a position to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance when all parties agree and conditions are met.

Liberal Commissioners deliver 2023 Rule of Law Report

Last week, liberal European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourová and Commissioner Didier Reynders presented the annual Rule of Law report, which examines yearly developments on EU countries’ national justice systems, anti-corruption frameworks, media pluralism and other institutional checks and balances. The report praised reforms implemented by Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Estonia Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

DP presents programme for 2023 Luxembourg elections

On 8 July, ALDE Party member DP - Demokratesch Partei held a party Congress to present the programme for Luxembourg's general election in October, confirming Prime Minister Xavier Bettel as lead candidate. Under the slogan “Close to you”, DP aim to improve quality of life and strengthen purchasing power in Luxembourg to support the needs of the middle class, families and businesses.

The Alliance of Her holds first youth summer retreat

Last weekend, the Alliance of Her held its first summer retreat gathering 20 young female liberal leaders under 30, representing 20 liberal parties from 16 countries. The event at the Domaine de Ronchinne in Belgium provided the up-and-coming, ambitious young women the chance to share ideas, insights and common challenges with like-minded women in politics.

The Alliance Of Her is currently taking applications to select at least four new members of its Alumnae Advisory Board to provide advice, feedback and ideas to help grow, strengthen and shape the programme. Applications are open until 21 July and successful candidates will be introduced at the Alliance Of Her Summit on 28 October.

On 14-15 September, Renew Europe CoR will hold its 2023 Summit of Young Elected Local and Regional Leaders at the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels, a dynamic forum where young liberal and democrat politicians can engage and exchange innovative ideas and exemplary approaches. Applications are open until 19 July.

Renew Europe CoR pushes for France to introduce regional COPs

Vincent Chauvet, Mayor of Autun, France, is calling on the French government to support his proposal to introduce regional Conference of Parties (COP) ahead of an expected official announcement on 17 July. France is currently looking into the opportunity of starting regional COPs as a means to bring the green transition to the local and regional levels.

Renew Europe leads clampdown on sanction dodgers

On 6 July, the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs adopted the Parliament's position on a new directive to harmonise criminal offences and penalties for malicious sanction evasion across the EU, as a step to end the impunity for those violating sanctions following Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
