Every year 15,000 women suffer from physical disabilities and/or infertility because of illegal abortions. In Poland, Malta, Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Gibraltar women have no legal and safe access to abortion. In Hungary, Slovakia and Turkey governments campaign against it. In Italy and Croatia there have been legislative initiatives to restrict abortion rights. We call on these governments to decriminalise and ensure safe and legal abortion. Join the fight!

Split mayor re-elected in landslide victory

Last weekend, Ivica Puljak became the first-ever mayor of Split, Croatia’s second-largest city, to have won re-election. In a stunning victory, Puljak won by a landslide, taking 66% of the vote. His party, Centar - also an ALDE Party member - won eight seats more in the city council, compared to previous elections. In his victory speech, Puljak promised he would be “the mayor of all the citizens of Split”.

Romanian liberals elect new leader

Cătălin Drulă was elected leader of ALDE Party’s Romanian member party Union Save Romania (USR) over the weekend. The former Minister for Transport and two term member of Parliament had been acting President since February of this year. Drulă will lead Romania’s biggest opposition party for the next four years and aims to be the driving force in the Romanian government in 2024.

François Decoster supports Melilla

François Decoster, President of the Renew Europe Group at the Committee of Regions, asked the Czech government assuming the EU’s rotating presidency, to support Eduardo de Castro, President of Melilla, one of the two autonomous cities of Spain located in North Africa. Decoster also asked for support for the people of Melilla in the face of the recent tragedy and the constant migratory pressure on the southern border of the EU.

The EU continues to support Ukraine and Moldova

The European Parliament adopted two important texts on 7 June to help both Ukraine and Moldova while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine. The Renew Europe Group warmly welcomed the large majority for these measures, which will provide further urgent and very much needed macro-financial assistance (MFA) of €1 billion to Ukraine and temporary trade liberalisation measures for Moldova.

Srebenica massacre: Renew Europe calls for unity and dialogue

On 11 July, the Renew Europe Group participated at the annual commemoration of the Srebrenica massacre. Four of our MEPs, ALDE Party co-President Ilhan Kyuckyuk, Nathalie Loiseau, Karen Melchior and Catharina Rinzema were present at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre for the 27th anniversary of the genocide. The Group stated that we must join efforts so that violence never comes back to the region and to Bosnia Herzegovina.
