Estonia has new coalition government

The new coalition government of Estonia, led by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, took office this week on 18 July. The coalition, formed by ALDE Party Member Reformierakond, together with Isamaa and SDE, will have a majority of 55 of 101 seats in the Estonian Parliament. Liberals hold the post of Prime Minister and other key portfolios such as Finance and Defence.

No rule of law, no EU money

Last week, the European Commission presented their annual Rule of Law Report, which provides an overview on the state of rule of law in the EU and its Member States and a series of recommendations for improvement. The report raises concerns in key areas including judiciary independence, media freedom, civil society and government checks and balances.

Join us at the Political Festival of Europe!

On 25-28 August, ALDE Party will take part in the Political Festival of Europe, a yearly democracy festival that gathers citizens of Europe to discuss politics and embrace Europe’s rich history and culture in Mariager, Denmark. ALDE Party co-Presidents Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP and Senator Timmy Dooley, as well as two Vice Presidents, one European Commissioner and other liberal leaders will be attending the event as panellists.

Digital Decade Policy Programme: Deal secures robust governance framework for digital transformation

Renew Europe welcomed last week’s inter-institutional agreement on the 2030 Digital Decade Policy Programme, introducing a sound cooperation and monitoring mechanism at the EU level to ensure that ambitious digital targets are achieved across all EU Member States by 2030. Moreover, it aims to reinforce the Union’s digital leadership and promote human-centred, inclusive, sustainable digital policies, empowering citizens and businesses.

Council and European Commission must level up efforts to protect Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights

The state of the rule of law and fundamental rights in the EU is again on the agenda, as the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs adopted two reports on the issue of Hungary and ensuring citizens’ fundamental rights. Swift and decisive action is needed to ensure the fundamental rights of all citizens in the EU!
