Ministers discuss protectionism ahead of ECOFIN Council

On 17 January, ministers from our political family and the European Investment Bank President met to discuss the US Inflation Reduction Act and economic and financial challenges for Europe in 2023. The Ministers agreed that the integrity of the European Single Market and international trade rules need to be respected and a coordinated European response should be put in place to return to fiscal sustainability.

Ciudadanos concludes refoundation with new leadership

Spanish ALDE Party member Ciudadanos held their General Assembly on 14-15 January to confirm the new leadership and political direction of the party. Patricia Guasp and Adrian Vázquez Lázara MEP became the Political Spokesperson and Secretary General, respectively, after obtaining 53% of the vote. Speaking at the event, ALDE Party Co-President Timmy Dooley stressed the need for a political party such as Ciudadanos in Spain.

Renew Europe CoR: Croatian Mayor on the adoption of euro

On 1 January, Croatia became the 20th EU Member State to adopt the euro as currency; with its economy becoming more stable for investors and showing that in challenging times, working more closely together as a Union has tangible benefits. Renew Europe CoR interviewed Ivan Gulam, Mayor of Pirovac, to find out how this change is being felt in his municipality.

Liberal International is looking for a Communications Officer to develop and implement an internal and external communication strategy for its global federation. The post will be based on their offices in London and applications are open until 22 January.

Renew Europe: EU must launch full set of sanctions targeting Russia

This week, Renew Europe urged the EU to launch a full set of sanctions against all companies and individuals that still trade and deal in Russia or with Russian companies. Europe needs a strong and coordinated response to the ongoing attacks by the Russian army against civilian residential buildings, such as the one targeting an apartment complex in Dnipro on 14 January.

New rules on shipments of waste should boost circular economy

Making the most of the economic and environmental potential of the EU waste market requires more sustainable management of waste streams. Renew Europe welcomed the vote in the European Parliament this week on a New Waste Shipment Regulation, which tackles illegal waste shipments and establishes an electronic exchange system to reduce administrative burden and facilitate waste shipments for recycling and reuse in the EU.
