Liberals condemn the detention of Alexei Navalny

Europe’s Liberals from ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen to President of the European Council Charles Michel have been quick to react and condemn the detention of Alexei Navalny. The leaders of both ALDE liberal parties in Russia, YABLOKO and PARNAS, have also expressed their outrage. ALDE Party has always stood up against political persecution, especially in Russia.

ALDE President welcomes Biden-Harris Administration

Later today, the new President of the United States will be inaugurated with Joe Biden taking office as the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris as the first female Vice President. ALDE President Hans van Baalen welcomes the new US Administration and hopes to intensify the transatlantic partnership on issues such as freedom and democracy, climate change and digital revolution.

Kaja Kallas leads talks to form new coalition government in Estonia

Kaja Kallas, the leader of the Reform Party, accepted the nomination from the President of Estonia on Thursday 14 January as candidate for Prime Minister and to try to form a new government following the resignation of Jüri Ratas and his coalition government.

ALDE VP presents candidacy as opposition unite ahead of elections

Working towards the scheduled parliamentary elections in Hungary in 2022, ALDE member party Momentum have begun nominating their candidates to take part in the pre-election primaries with ALDE Party Vice President Daniel Berg submitting his candidacy for a constituency in Budapest.

ALDE President appointed to advise Dutch government on economy

Earlier this month, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen was appointed by the Dutch government to the ‘Eminent Persons Group on the European Economy’ which advises the country’s politics on the EU economy as well as budgetary, fiscal and monetary policies. President van Baalen has also reacted to the news of the recent resignation of the Dutch government, underlining that this has no effect on the country’s fight against COVID-19 or its EU position.

Portugal to vote in presidential elections this week

On Sunday 24 January, Portugal goes to the polls, as the country’s presidential elections take place. ALDE Party member Iniciativa Liberal will be represented by lead candidate Tiago Mayan Gonçalves. ALDE President Hans van Baalen wishes Mayan Gonçalves best of luck.

Liberals push for a clear and strong space strategy at the 13th European Space Conference

European Council President Charles Michel, Commissioner Thierry Breton and Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès took part in the 13th European Space Conference last week, highlighting the importance of Europe’s green and digital transitions and calling for a strong strategy to reinforce the bloc’s position as a global leader on space.

UK cities and regions want ties with EU counterparts

The European Committee of the Regions has established a new UK contact group, which represents local and regional authorities in the continued dialogue process and stays in touch with the group’s UK counterparts. Renew Europe CoR Vice-President and member of this group, Michiel Rijsberman, recently discussed fisheries and what the UK-EU trade deal means for local and regional authorities.

ALDE family remembers Yves Robert

The ALDE family has been deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Yves Robert, Coordinator for ALDE Individual Members (AIM) in France. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen and the AIM Steering Committee remember Mr Robert as a passionate European liberal and one of the most driven individual members who made a true contribution to the European project and the AIM programme.

EU vaccination strategy risks being undermined by delays and secrecy

During a European Parliament plenary debate on the European Union’s vaccination strategy on 19 January, President of the Renew Europe Group Dacian Cioloş welcomed the ambitious plan to offer access to COVID-19 vaccination to every European but cautioned that more transparency is needed to restore trust and confidence in the whole process.

Renew Europe calls for sustainable border management and dignified reception capacities

Renew Europe stresses the critical need for a sustainable approach to the bloc’s external borders and EU migration and asylum policies and insists it is crucial to put into force a well-functioning Common European Asylum System. In its position paper on the topic, the Group shares its vision on Europe's migration and asylum policy.
