Reformierakond elect PM Michal as new leader

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal was elected as the new leader of Eesti Reformierakond at a party Congress on 8 September. Michal was sworn in as Prime Minister in July after previous leader Kaja Kallas left to become the European Union’s next candidate for the role of High Representative for Foreign Affairs (HR/VP).

Draghi report urges EU action on competitiveness

European liberals welcome the launch of Mario Draghi’s report entitled “The future of European competitiveness” and stress the need for immediate action by the new European Commission. Liberals do not want to compromise on European welfare, environment or freedoms, and call on the European Commission and EU Member States to act accordingly.

ALDE Party welcomes new Social Media Trainee

On September 10, we welcomed Manuel Costa as our new Social Media Trainee. Manuel joins us after completing a Master’s degree in political communication at Cardiff University and is a member of Iniciativa Liberal in Portugal. He will assist with the creation of our social media content across multiple platforms as well as other online activities. Welcome!

Meet our MEPs: Liberalų sąjūdis and Laisvės partija

Petras Auštrevičius, one of the founding members of Liberalų Sąjūdis and one of the chief negotiators for Lithuania's access to the EU, was first elected as an MEP in 2014 and is serving his third successive mandate. Laisvės partija will be represented for the first time in the European Parliament by Dainius Žalimas, the former chair of the Lithuanian Constitutional Court.

Meet our MEPs: Union des démocrates et indépendants (UDI)

Following the European elections, local councillor and deputy mayor of Amiens Valérie Devaux was elected as an MEP for our member party UDI in France. In 2021, she was elected departmental councilor of the Somme, co-chairing the majority group. Her commitment to serving her fellow citizens has always been her main motivation, which she will continue to bring to the European Parliament.

With an extensive career focusing on the fight for human rights, Charles Goerens is back in the European Parliament to represent our member party DP in Luxembourg. He served as an MEP in six different European Parliament mandates and also worked as Luxembourg's Minister for Cooperation, Humanitarian Action, and Defence, as well as Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2004.

Renew Europe MEPs sign Ostend declaration

On 11 September, Renew Europe members adopted the Ostend declaration, setting out key political priorities for the forthcoming hearings of candidate European Commissioners and the first 100 days of the incoming European Commission. Meeting in Ostend, Belgium, MEPs signed a document detailing expectations for parliamentary hearings of prospective candidates.

Belarus: Stop repression of political prisoners

Renew Europe reiterated its call on the EU to impose stronger sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko’s regime in Belarus, as the repression against political protesters continue to escalate. More than 1,400 people have been imprisoned on political grounds, including Maryia Kalesnikava, a leader of mass protests that came close to toppling Lukashenko in 2020.
