Save the date for next ALDE Party Council Meeting

At last week’s ALDE Party Bureau meeting, it was decided that the next ALDE Party Council meeting will take place in Rome on 10-11 December. More information on the programme, venue and agenda will be made available in due course.

Russia votes amid widespread reports of voting irregularities

ALDE Party member Yabloko party participated in the elections to the federal and regional parliaments in Russia last week. The party participated in 56 election campaigns at the regional and municipal levels in 27 regions of Russia, fought against deregistrations and different obstacles in campaigning, but according to the preliminary results of the Central Electoral Commission received just 1.34% of the national vote and denied a win in any of the single-mandate constituencies.

German Liberals take last spurt before federal elections

One week before the election day, German ALDE Party member, Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) held an extraordinary party conference to launch a last call to vote. Ahead of the elections, the party currently polls at around 12%. In his speech, party leader Christian Lindner asserted that FDP is the only credible political centrist alternative for the various challenges that lie ahead.

UK LibDems look to smash the 'blue wall' and fight for a fair deal

In his speech at the LibDems Autumn Conference, party leader Sir Ed Davey declared that Liberal Democrats can be the party of education, of caring and of business, and be the catalyst to defeating the Conservative government. ALDE Party acting co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP and Vice President Henrik Bach Mortensen participated in panel discussions as part of the fringe programme, and Vice President Sal Brinton was also active during the Conference.

Čmilytė-Nielsen re-elected leader at party congress

On 18 September, Liberalų sąjūdis (Liberal Movement) – one of the ALDE Party members in Lithuania – held its 13th party congress during which incumbent party leader Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen was re-elected for another term. Currently Speaker of the Seimas, Čmilytė-Nielsen has been leading Liberal Movement since 2019 and has since led her party in the coalition government formed after the country’s 2020 parliamentary elections.

Mouvement Réformateur adopts changes to modernise the party

On 18 September, Belgian ALDE member Mouvement Réformateur (MR) hosted its statutory Congress in Namur, Belgium. Party leader Georges-Louis Bouchez kicked off the congress with a vote on various changes to the internal rules to help the party democratise, modernise, femininise and internationalise by opening up to other European national parties.

Radikale Venstre meets for party congress ahead of November local elections

On 18-19 September, Danish ALDE Party member Radikale Venstre convened for an in-person congress for the first time in two years, bringing together 600 party members and activists from across the country. In her speech, party leader Sofie Carsten Nielsen noted that the upcoming local elections on 16 November are an opportunity to champion change.

SMC votes on manifesto at their 4th Congress

After a difficult and challenging period for the party, SMC leader Zdravko Počivalšek wants to put the social and economic development of Slovenia at the centre ahead of next year’s elections. The ‘Slovenia – 2030’ manifesto adopted during the Congress focuses on crucial topics such as the economy’s green and digital transitions, de-bureaucratisation, regional development and housing policy.

Citizens participation key for Europe's future

The first of four European Citizens’ Panels gathered together 200 European citizens in Strasbourg on 17-19 September to debate topics that matter the most for the future of Europe. ALDE Party is playing an active role in the development of the Conference to ensure that citizens are in the spotlight by giving citizens the opportunity to submit their own ideas for the future of Europe through our dedicated digital hub and through our Hans van Baalen town hall meetings held across Europe.

We are happy to invite you to our next Liberal Breakfast about the German federal elections on 27 September at 9:00 CEST, organised in coordination with FNF Europe. The event will examine the results of the election, the impact of campaigning during COVID-19, paying particular attention to how the German liberal party FDP performed and the potential alliances to be forged in a unique multiparty political landscape.

Renew Europe condemns Poland's attacks on media freedom and rule of law

Europe’s liberals are disturbed to witness how media freedom, a core pillar of democracy, continues to be threatened in Poland. In a European Parliament debate last week, the Renew Europe Group strongly condemned the PiS Government's latest attempt to silence critical voices through the Lex-TVN Bill, a full attack on media pluralism.

Renew Europe: EU Parliament should have a say on HERA

The creation of an EU Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) has been a long-time priority for Renew Europe, and the Group deplores that the European Parliament has now been sidelined by the European Commission on the creation of HERA.
