Liberals at UNGA push for Ukraine, climate change solutions

On 19-23 September, the United Nations held the 78th session of its General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, bringing together world leaders and representatives for a discussion on today’s international issues. Liberals including European Council President Charles Michel and Prime Ministers from European Union Member States attended the high-profile assembly, holding speeches on topics that matter for our global future.

Yesilgöz-Zegerius confirmed as VVD leader

At a party Congress in Rotterdam on 23 September, ALDE Party member VVD ratified the appointment of Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius as the party’s new leader. Party members also adopted the campaign manifesto, held a General Assembly and were presented with the full 80-strong list of candidates for the snap parliamentary elections in the Netherlands on 22 November.

ALDE Party Co-President co-hosts Schengen event with USR

On 22-23 September, ALDE Party Co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP co-organised an event on the importance of the Schengen area for Romania and Bulgaria. The event, co-organised with Vlad Botoș MEP from ALDE Party member USR in Romania and supported by Renew Europe, was also attended by ALDE Party Vice-President Dan Barna, and USR President Cătălin Drula MP.

Ministers discuss competitiveness ahead of Council meeting

On 25 September, ALDE Party and Renew Europe co-hosted a meeting of Ministers in Brussels ahead of the Competitiveness (COMPET) Council of the European Union. Ministers discussed the main topics on the COMPET Council agenda, as well as increasing European competitiveness in the context of high inflation and ensuring the EU Single Market works for everyone, especially SMEs.

Lib Dems launch Fair Deal plan to smash Blue Wall

On 23-26 September, ALDE Party member Liberal Democrats held its party conference in Bournemouth, during which members adopted “For a Fair Deal”, a major policy paper that will form the basis of the party’s manifesto for the next general election expected to take place within the next year, following four big by-election successes in the past year and further by-elections on the near horizon.

Keskusta confirm presidential candidate at party Congress

On 23 September, ALDE Party member Keskusta unanimously approved their support for Olli Rehn as candidate for Finland’s presidential elections taking place on 28 January 2024. In an address to the Congress in Turku, Finland, ALDE Party Co-President Timmy Dooley highlighted the successful and democratic selection of the party’s presidential candidate and examined the challenges the party’s leadership will have to face, being in national opposition and local government.

French liberals make gains in Senate elections

Last weekend, ALDE Party members Parti Radical and UDI made gains in partial indirect Senate elections in France. The Senate’s mandate was renewed at about 50% on Sunday through an indirect election, electors comprising mayors, local and regional Members of Parliament. Parti Radical won four seats in the upper chamber, with two candidates being re-elected, while UDI have won 13 senator seats.

Open VLD elect new party President

On 23 September, ALDE Party member Open VLD elected Tom Ongena as its new party President with 59% of the vote at a party Congress. Ongena had been appointed as acting President in July 2023 following the departure of Egbert Lachaert, who announced he would step down from the leadership role in June after three years.

Renew Europe CoR supports SMEs at local and regional levels

On 25 September, during the Renew Europe SME Task Force meeting in the European Parliament, Renew Europe CoR President François Decoster and other participants provided concrete examples of how local and regional authorities support SMEs in their local communities. Members presented their actions to MEPs including Martina Dlabajová, Mauri Pekkarinen, Róża Thun Und Hohenstein and Iskra Mihaylova.

Schengen Borders Code: New rules to preserve free movement

Last week, the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs adopted the European Parliament’s position on the new Schengen Borders Code. Throughout the long negotiations, Renew Europe made it a priority to preserve free movement by making sure any reintroductions of border controls are limited in time and subject to strict justification.

Renew Europe supports clean water for everyone

Last week, Renew Europe welcomed the approval in the European Parliament Committee on Environment of the update of the Urban Wastewater Directive. The revision was led by Nils Torvalds MEP and provides for a steady extension of urban wastewater collecting systems and the introduction of new monitoring requirements, putting the EU on track to achieve clean and healthy water for all.
