FDP kingmaker after federal elections in Germany

Last Sunday’s federal elections in Germany marked a historic day for Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP). The party won 11.5% of the votes, and with this result, FDP becomes the fourth biggest force in the German parliament. ALDE Party acting co-President Timmy Dooley issued a statement congratulating FDP and party leader Christian Lindner on this excellent result.

Iceland election narrowly misses making history but liberals make gains

Last Saturday, Iceland almost made history with its national election results by becoming the first Parliament in Europe with a female majority of MPs, until a recount showed it had just fallen short. ALDE member party Viðreisn, led by Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, participated actively in these elections and increased its share of the vote to 8.3% and gained an additional mandate in the next 63-seat Parliament.

Liberals at UNGA: global commitment required to solve existing and future crises

The 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) kicked off earlier this month, bringing together world leaders across the globe to address issues that affect us now and will do so for years to come. The liberal presence at this prestigious platform was strong, with European Council President Charles Michel and four liberal Prime Ministers all holding speeches on topics that matter the most for shared European and global future.

Swiss liberals campaign for LGBTIQ+ family rights and welcome referendum result

On Sunday 26 September, 64.1% of the Swiss voted in favour of equal family rights in a nation-wide referendum, with a majority achieved in all 26 cantons. Swiss ALDE Party members FDP Die Liberalen and Grünliberale Partei Schweiz, who campaigned heavily for equality of the LGBTIQ+ community, were happy with the result.

Centerpartiet adopts green liberal agenda at Congress

On 23-26 September, ALDE Party member Centerpartiet in Sweden held a virtual party congress to discuss, debate and vote on new party policies. During the Congress, Annie Lööf celebrated 10 years as party leader, and was also re-elected for another term in her leadership role. Three new political programmes were adopted during the Congress, all of which are key focus areas ahead of the 2022 elections: green economic growth, the strengthening of democratic institutions and quality healthcare.

Renew Europe CoR’s Cardenete to lead European tourism association

Last week, Manuel Alejandro Cardenete, Deputy Minister at the Regional Ministry of Tourism in Andalucia and Coordinator for Natural Resources and Tourism at the Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions, was elected President of NECSTouR. As the new President, Cardenete will strategically guide the work of the network, which consists of 39 official tourism organisations across Europe, over the next three years.

Liberal Breakfast: FDP ready to enter German government following federal elections

Following the federal elections in Germany, ALDE Party together with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Europe hosted the first Liberal Breakfast of the autumn, which focused on the election results and what they mean for liberals in Germany and in Europe. Speakers Dr. Thorsten Lieb and Alice Schmidt shared their perspective on the next steps for FDP and underlined the liberal success among the German youth.

Common charger: Renew Europe welcomes long-awaited proposal

The Renew Europe Group welcomed last week’s proposal by the European Commission for a revised Radio Equipment Directive, aimed at harmonising the charging port and fast charging technology for many electronic devices – a step forward for consumers and the environment.

Renew Europe welcomes scrapping of anti-LGBT resolution by Polish region

Renew Europe welcomes the news that the Polish region of Swietokrzyskie has scrapped their shameful anti-LGBTIQ+ motion. The scrapping of this motion is the result of months of constant pressure from Renew Europe, and the Group is now calling on other Polish regions to follow.
