Liberals condemn illegal annexation of Ukrainian regions

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed so-called “accession treaties” formalising Russia’s illegal annexation of four occupied regions in Ukraine, the largest forced takeover of territory in Europe since the Second World War. European liberals were swift to join the European Union in unequivocally rejecting this flagrant defiance of international law, strongly condemning Putin’s delusional acts and offering continued support for the people of Ukraine.

MRF increase seats as Bulgaria votes in fourth snap election

On 2 October, voters in Bulgaria went to the polls to vote in snap parliamentary elections. ALDE Party member MRF finished third in the vote, winning 13.8% and is set to have 36 mandates in the next parliament, a further increase of two seats from the last snap election in November 2021. Following the election, seven parties are set to re-enter the Bulgarian parliament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina elects new leaders

Voters in Bosnia and Herzegovina went to the polls on Sunday in elections for five different institutions. ALDE Party member party Naša stranka conducted a vibrant and positive campaign, advocating for reforms to take the country towards EU membership status, simplifying bureaucracy, prioritising education and tackling corruption. Vote counting remains underway in the country.

Fianna Fáil stands with Ukraine at its 80th Ard Fheis

Last weekend, Irish ALDE Party member Fianna Fáil organised the 80th Ard Fheis in Dublin, the party’s first in-person Congress following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Congress included a special session on Ukraine, moderated by ALDE Party co-President Timmy Dooley with interventions from ALDE Party Vice President Kira Rudik and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna.

LYMEC welcomes European Commission Youth Action Plan

Young liberals welcome the European Commission Youth Action Plan launched this week, despite concerns about lack of representation during the drafting process. Youth are the changemakers and future leaders of Europe, and the creation of safe spaces for youth dialogue is key to ensure young people are heard. LYMEC looks forward to seeing more EU-level action on youth as a result of this plan.

No EU funds for Orbán before rule of law reforms

This week in the European Parliament, Renew Europe pushed for the European Council to follow the Commission proposal blocking EU funds for the Hungarian government, due to ongoing rule of law issues. No funds should be unblocked before rule of law is restored, and suspended EU funds should be directed to civil society, said the Group.

Europol must investigate illegitimate use of spyware against citizens

Following revelations of some EU governments' abuse of spyware to surveil journalists, opposition politicians, NGOs and public officials, it is becoming increasingly clear that the illegitimate use of spyware is a European issue. EU citizens' fundamental rights are being breached and there is evidence of criminal acts. Renew Europe is pushing for Europol to be involved in the various ongoing investigations of wiretapping scandals.
