ALDE Party Congress 2024: All you need to know

From key debates, urgency resolutions and Bureau elections, our handy guide has all the essential information you need to know before we welcome you in Estoril for the ALDE Party Congress on 4-6 October. Current Vice-President Svenja Hahn MEP is the only candidate for ALDE Party President, while 11 nominations have been advanced for six Vice-President roles.

Austrian liberals gain seats in national election

On 29 September, Austria held legislative elections to elect all 183 seats in the National Council. NEOS, led by Beate Meinl-Reisinger, received a record 9.2% of the popular vote and won 18 seats in the next mandate. The result represents a gain of 1.1 percentage point from the last legislative election held in 2019, when liberals won 15 seats thanks to 8.1% of the popular vote.

Rutte takes office as NATO Secretary General

On 1 October, Mark Rutte took office as the new Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) at a ceremony in Brussels, taking over from Jens Stoltenberg. Representing ALDE Party member VVD in the Netherlands, Rutte has presided over four Dutch governments since being originally appointed as Prime Minister in 2010, leaving his post earlier this year.

Ministers discuss ahead of COMPET Council meeting

On 26 September, Ministers from our political family met in Brussels ahead of the Competitiveness Council of the European Union (COMPET). The participants exchanged views on priorities in the new term following the European elections and the main issues of the Council agenda, notably the conclusions of the Draghi report.

Liberals call for world peace at UNGA

On 23-27 September, the United Nations held the 79th session of its General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Liberals including European Council President Charles Michel, Prime Ministers and Ministers from European Union Member States attended the high-profile assembly, holding speeches on topics that matter the most for our shared European and global future.

Oetjen elected ELF President at General Assembly

On 26 September, Jan-Christoph Oetjen MEP (FDP, DE) was elected as the European Liberal Forum’s new President at the Autumn General Assembly in Florence, Italy. ELF’s General Assembly also elected Lucia Yar MEP (Progresívneho inštitútu, SK) as First Vice-President, Marco Mariani (FLE, IT) as Second Vice-President and Milosz Hodun (Projekt:Polska, PL) as Treasurer.

Meet our MEPs: Radikale Venstre

Sigrid Friis Frederiksen was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in June as Radikale Venstre's lead candidate for the European elections. A former chair of Radikale's youth wing, Radikal Ungdom, she will fight for sustainable and green policies in the European Parliament Committees on Industry, Research and Energy and Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

Ivars Ijabs enters his second mandate as MEP for our Latvian member Latvijas attīstībai. He was a widely known political scientist, publicist, associated professor and researcher before entering politics. His priorities are with legislative proposals that would bring more EU funding for science, research, and innovation in Latvia, as well as issues around the climate crisis.
