ALDE Party Council 2023 kicks off on Friday

On 20-21 October, political leaders and partners from the European liberal family will gather for the 2023 ALDE Party Council in Bucharest, Romania. Over the weekend, liberals will debate key topics on the European political landscape, provide updates on the ALDE Party 2024 Manifesto procedure and adopt urgency resolutions.

Nowoczesna win six seats in Polish elections

On 15 October, Poland held parliamentary elections to elect all members of the Sejm and Senate. ALDE Party member Nowoczesna ran as part of the Civic Coalition alliance, which was confirmed as the second-biggest political force in Poland with 30.7% of the popular vote. The Civic Coalition will take 157 MPs into the Sejm, six of which will be held by Nowoczesna members.

ECOFIN Ministers meet ahead of Council

On 17 October, ALDE Party co-hosted a meeting of Ministers in Luxembourg ahead of the Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) Council of the European Union. During the meeting chaired by Renew Europe Vice-President Morten Løkkegaard MEP, Ministers discussed the main topics on the ECOFIN Council agenda, including the proposed reform of the economic governance framework and the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

ALDE Party Bureau condemns attacks in Kosovo

The Bureau of the ALDE Party expresses its concern and calls on authorities in Serbia to fully cooperate with the international community and Kosovo authorities in investigating and bringing those responsible for the attack by a large group of Serbian paramilitaries on 24 September in the north of Kosovo with heavy weapons against Kosovo police patrols in which one police officer was killed to justice.

Gibraltar liberals win fourth successive elections

On 12 October, the Liberal Party of Gibraltar, running in a long-standing alliance with the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party, won its fourth election in a row with 49.9% of the popular vote, bringing 9 deputies into the Gibraltar Parliament. Liberal leader Dr. Joseph Garcia topped the poll with 9,852 personal votes and will continue to serve as Deputy Chief Minister.

Hans van Baalen scholarship awarded to junior researcher

On 10 October, the Hans van Baalen Scholarship selection committee unanimously decided to select Laia Comerma Calatayud as the recipient of the Scholarship on EU-Taiwan Relations. The scholarship, led by ALDE Party’s political foundation European Liberal Forum, was established in memoriam of Hans van Baalen, the late former President of ALDE Party, a staunch supporter of Taiwanese freedom and democracy.

Renew Europe CoR increases Western Balkans cooperation

Renew Europe CoR has partnered with FNF Europe’s three-year long project to increase cooperation between local liberal politicians in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia, connecting them through concrete projects and fostering regional participation. The aim is to identify liberal European cities and regions with best practices in the topics discussed, involving their administrations in cooperation and co-organising study visits to constituencies.

Martin Hojsík elected European Parliament Vice-President

On 18 October, Martin Hojsík MEP, from ALDE Party member Progresívne Slovensko (PS), was elected European Parliament Vice-President for Renew Europe after a vote in the European Parliament’s Plenary session. Hojsík will replace PS leader Michal Šimečka MEP, who is leaving his role as MEP and European Parliament Vice-President after he was elected as Member of Parliament in Slovakia earlier this month.

Renew Europe: Enforce forced labour ban

On 16 October, the European Parliament Committees on International Trade and on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection jointly adopted a strong mandate on the regulation to ban the products made using forced labour on the EU market. Renew Europe wants to reach a deal with the Council and the Commission to crucially have a legislation in force before the end of the mandate.
