ALDE Party Council welcomes new members in Bucharest

On 20-21 October, political leaders and partners from the European liberal family gathered for the ALDE Party Council meeting in Bucharest, Romania. Over the weekend, Council delegates voted to welcome Azione and Liberali Democratici Europei as new full members from Italy, adopt resolutions on pressing issues across Europe and confirm the nomination of Didrik de Schaetzen as ALDE Party’s new Secretary General.

Liberal leaders open ALDE Party Council

On 20 October, ALDE Party co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP hosted the political opening event of the ALDE Party Council meeting in Bucharest. The event featured strong participation from co-organiser and ALDE Party member USR, including ALDE Party Vice-President and USR MP Dan Barna, USR President Cătălin Drulă MP and USR’s lead candidate for the European elections in 2024 Elena Lasconi.

Liberals keep strong representation in Swiss elections

On 22 October, Switzerland held federal elections to elect all members of the National Council and Council of States. ALDE Party members FDP and Green Liberal Party (GLP) maintained a strong representation in the house, respectively winning 28 and ten seats in the National Council. Party leaders Thierry Burkart (FDP) and Jürg Grossen (GLP) were re-elected to their seats in Aargau and Bern.

D66 hold party Congress ahead of election

On 21 October, ALDE Party member D66 held a party Congress in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, ahead of snap parliamentary elections on 22 November. Rob Jetten, the incumbent Minister of Climate and Energy, addressed his first Congress as D66 party leader since taking over the political leadership from Deputy Prime Minister Sigrid Kaag in August, outlining the party’s view for the parliamentary elections and beyond.

Momentum stage Orbán protest on revolution anniversary

On 23 October, activists from ALDE Party member Momentum Mozgalom in Hungary protested Viktor Orbán’s relationship with Russia on the 67th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution, when Soviet tanks crushed a countrywide uprising against the Hungarian People's Republic, killing and wounding thousands of Hungarians. Momentum members threw red paint in front of Orbán’s office in Budapest, Hungary, days after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Renew Europe CoR: Closing the gender gap

Renew Europe CoR’s Donatella Porzi and Sara Arslanagic contributed to the European Parliament Gender Equality Week, looking at strategies to close the gender gap in politics starting from the local and regional levels. Ensuring a more level playing field for women to enter and thrive in politics is essential for democratic representation, good governance, sound policy making and overall gender equality.

On Tuesday, Renew Europe welcomed the adoption of the Listing Act Package by the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON). The draft text aims to ease access to finance for companies by facilitating listing on stock exchanges and alleviating the administrative burden, essential to support their growth and resilience.
