Lithuanian liberals more than double their seats in parliament

The second round of parliamentary elections in Lithuania was held on 25 October with voters choosing their representatives for the remaining 71 seats of the Seimas. The results of the first round on 11 October looked very positive for ALDE Party members Liberalų Sąjūdis, Laisves Partija and Darbo Partija. The second electoral round confirmed these successful results, with the parties gaining 13, 11 and 10 seats respectively. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen congratulates all parties for their results.

ALDE Party President discusses the future of transatlantic relations in post-US elections world

With less than a week to go to the Presidential election in the United States, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen looks forward to future transatlantic relations. Speaking at a webinar, organised by Liberal International, on how the EU-US relations will evolve during the new presidential mandate, van Baalen highlighted the role of the next US President as a close and important partner to the European Union.

ALDE Party President reacts to escalation between Turkey and France

Following the killing of Samuel Paty, tensions between Turkey and France have escalated. After a speech by President Macron at Paty’s memorial, President Erdoğan has called on Muslim countries to ban all French products and has suggested that President Macron needs “mental check-ups”. ALDE President Hans van Baalen stands by President Macron in his fight against terrorism and for liberal values and condemns the unacceptable actions by Erdoğan.

In last week's regional election in the Azores, ALDE Party's Portuguese member Iniciativa Liberal secured its first seat in local government. This is a historical victory for the party and another step towards a more liberal Portugal.

Reynders: all actors needed on board when it comes to supply chains

On 27 October, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders joined POLITICO to discuss corporate responsibility for supply chains and what the best framework for the European Union should be. In his intervention, Reynders highlighted the importance of acting together and including all relevant stakeholder groups in the process.

Liberals govern in dozen EU capitals

With the recent election of Mārtiņš Staķis in Riga, liberals are now governing in a dozen of EU capital cities or seats of government. The Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions is looking forward to involving these Mayors in their Liberal Mayors Network and Liberal Mayors Summit. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting will take place online in the second half of November.

Bringing together campaign experts from both sides of the aisle, the panellists highlighted key issues such as the digital shift and political polarisation in their election outlook.

Liberal Breakfast takes a look at Europe’s tech sector

Last week, the ALDE Party together with Apple hosted a Liberal Breakfast on the future of EU digital policy with a special focus on the question ‘How can we make Europe’s tech sector number one?’. Other topics under discussion included, among others, the current state of the Digital Services Act, Artificial Intelligence and the importance of digital education.

Digital Services Act: Renew Europe sends a strong message to the Commission

In view of the upcoming Digital Services Act, the European Parliament adopted three reports last week. These reports aim at adapting European legislation to the new digital challenges, with the Renew Europe Group playing a key role in their fruition.
