Liberal ministers take office in Luxembourg

Following parliamentary elections in Luxembourg last month, ALDE Party member Demokratesch Partei (DP) agreed to enter into a coalition government with seven out of 15 ministers. The new government was sworn in on 17 November, with outgoing Prime Minister Xavier Bettel taking up the Deputy-Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Greater Region portfolio.

Venstre confirm new leader and EU candidates

ALDE Party member Venstre in Denmark formalised their new leadership and lead candidate for the European elections in 2024 at a party Congress on 17-18 November. Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Minister of Economy, was elected as party chair. Meanwhile, Morten Løkkegaard MEP was chosen as Venstre’s lead candidate for the European elections in 2024.

Liberalerna confirm lead candidate for European elections

ALDE Party member Liberalerna confirmed Karin Karlsbro MEP as the party’s lead candidate for the European elections in 2024 at a party Congress. Karlsbro vowed to continue championing liberal values in Europe during a time of increased geopolitical fragmentation. ALDE Party co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP delivered a keynote speech on the future outlook for Sweden and the European Union at the meeting on 17-18 November.

Ministers meet ahead of AGRIFISH Council

On 20 November, ALDE Party co-President Senator Timmy Dooley chaired a meeting of Ministers from our political family in Brussels ahead of the Agriculture and Fisheries (AGRIFISH) Council of the European Union. During the meeting co-hosted by ALDE Party and Renew Europe, Ministers discussed items on the Council’s agenda including rural development, fishing opportunities for 2024, implementation of the forestry strategy and new genomic techniques.

Reformierakond re-elect Kallas as party leader

At a party Congress on 18 November, ALDE Party member Eesti Reformierakond confirmed the composition of its new party board and the re-election of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as party leader. Kallas received 636 votes from party members and was re-elected as leader for a further two-year term, continuing in the role she took over in 2018.

ELF Techno-Politics Forum discusses EU digital future

On 16 November, ALDE Party’s political foundation European Liberal Forum (ELF) held the Techno-Politics Forum, a conference featuring various panel discussions on Europe’s digital future. Staged in Brussels, the event brought together politicians, tech experts, stakeholders, industry representatives and academics to discuss how new and future technologies can influence traditional policymaking.

Vladimir Kara-Murza awarded 2023 Prize for Freedom

Russian journalist and democratic opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza is the recipient of this year’s Liberal International Prize for Freedom Award for his tireless efforts to expose corruption and injustice in Russia. On 15 November, a high-level ceremony took place in the House of Lords in London where Evgenia Kara-Murza was presented with the award on behalf of her husband.

Reshaping the EU’s approach to the Western Balkans

Renew Europe CoR demands a recalibration of the EU’s approach to the Western Balkans to navigate enlargement fatigue and foster a more positive and impactful relationship with accession countries. The Group has followed up on the European Commission’s Enlargement package and the annual Joint Consultative Committees and Working Groups on Western Balkans of the European Committee of the Regions, adopting a few recommendations.

Renew Europe: An EU framework for CO2 removals

Renew Europe welcomed the approval of a European Union certification framework for carbon removals by the European Parliament Plenary. The framework sets out EU-wide rules for measuring the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere aiming to boost innovative carbon removal technologies, carbon storage in products and sustainable carbon farming solutions.
