Five liberals to take office as European Commissioners

On 27 November, Members of the European Parliament approved the next European Commission to take office on 1 December. With five highly-qualified European Commissioners approved for five important portfolios, liberals are well represented to ensure that our values and policies are reflected at the highest levels of European diplomacy and policymaking.

Jetten calls for EU unity at D66 Congress

On 23 November, ALDE Party member D66 held its 120th party Congress in s’Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Party leader Rob Jetten addressed members in a keynote speech, underscoring the urgent need for European unity and hope-driven, inclusive leadership to confront global crises, from climate change to geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Bureau members outline areas of responsibility

On 21 November, ALDE Party Bureau members agreed to outline the main areas of responsibility within their respective roles at a meeting in Brussels. Each member has also been allocated countries where they will be the lead Bureau contact for ALDE Party members, looking to strengthen relations with current member parties and lead on exploring potential new partnership opportunities.

EP VP Wilmès to lead defence of EU values

On 21 November, Sophie Wilmès MEP was elected Chair of the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG) of the European Parliament. The group aims to create a permanent structure for an impartial, objective and constant monitoring of breaches of democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, and the fight against corruption within the EU.

Chauvet represents local authorities at COP29

Renew Europe CoR member Vincent Chauvet advocated for the inclusion of local and regional authorities in relevant UN climate processes at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Since his election in 2017 as Mayor of Autun, Chauvet positioned his city as a model for climate action. At COP29, he highlighted Autun’s citizen-driven approach to sustainability in various talks and side events.

Renew Europe condemns Novi Sad tragedy aftermath

Renew Europe denounces the lack of transparency in the investigation of the collapse of the canopy of the railway station in Novi Sad, Serbia, on 1 November. Four weeks after the tragedy, with no substantive answers from the investigation and insufficient accountability despite some vague arrests, the frustration and anger of the Serbian people is understandable.
