The year 2020 has been like no other. Despite the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, European Liberals have been working hard throughout 2020 to defend human rights and freedoms, uphold democracy and the rule of law and ensure a sustainable future for all Europeans.

Vestager and Breton launch landmark initiatives

On 15 December, European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager and Commissioner Thierry Breton unveiled two of the most awaited initiatives of 2020, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. Both initiatives are key to the European Digital Strategy and will protect citizens’ rights online.

Liberal ministers take office in Lithuania

On Thursday 10 December, following Lithuania’s parliamentary elections in October, new government ministers were sworn in. ALDE Party members Liberalų sąjūdis and Laisvės partija will hold five ministerial positions and Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, alumna of the European Women’s Academy, holds the position of Speaker of the House.

Mustafa Karadayi re-elected leader as MRF holds first online Congress

Mustafa Karadayi was re-elected leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) as the party gathered virtually for its 10th Congress on 12 December under the slogan "Freedom, unity, togetherness". During the Congress, speeches were made by numerous international guests and liberal partners.

European Women’s Academy alumnae meet for virtual event

On 8 December, European Women’s Academy (EWA) alumnae, supporters and organisers came together for a virtual event. The first of its kind for EWA, this meeting provided a moment to reflect on the personal stories of alumnae and share experiences that have helped women to succeed since taking part in the EWA programme.

Liberal Pre-Summit meeting ahead of crucial EU Council

Ahead of last week’s European Council meeting, liberal leaders met in Brussels to discuss key topics. After the meeting, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen reacted positively to the consensus reached on rule of law, as well as discussions on Brexit and the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Last week, ALDE Party and Liberty Global hosted a Liberal Breakfast on the green and digital transitions. The morning's discussion focused on how the EU can best tackle these transitions and how the public and private sector can work together to realise goals for sustainability and digitalisation in Europe.

Just transition fund: climate neutrality is only fair if it is shared by all

The Renew Europe Group in European Parliament welcomes the agreement reached on 9 December between the European Parliament and the European Council on the Just Transition Fund, a key instrument to ensure a just transition towards climate neutrality for regions facing energy, economic and social challenges.

The EU kicks off a better-connected Europe with InvestEU

Investing in the future to prepare the European economy for the post-COVID-19 crisis: this is one of the aims of the InvestEU programme, on which the European Council and the European Parliament have reached a political agreement following tough negotiations where the Renew Europe Group played an active role.
