The fourth edition of ALDE Party's series of events on the Conference on the Future of Europe will take place virtually on 9 February in collaboration with ALDE Party member Free Democratic Party (FDP), Germany. Join us online to have your say on the future of Europe and discuss important issues such as the digital transformation and Europe’s role in the world with our distinguished panellists!

Excellent results for Liberals in Portugal!

On 30 January, voters in Portugal went to the polls for early parliamentary elections. According to the provisional results, ALDE Party member party Iniciativa Liberal can celebrate a big increase in their share of the vote. The party has received almost 270,000 votes (4.98% nationwide) which will translate into eight mandates in the next Parliament and make the liberals the fourth political force of the country.

Liberals are ready to take on the new year

Last month, the ALDE Party launched a small video-series featuring nine liberal leaders from all over Europe and their political resolutions for 2022. From translating citizens’ ideas into concrete actions in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe to defending democracy and rule of law, liberals are ready to make the most out of this new year.

Italian President Mattarella re-elected

After eight rounds of voting, 1,009 Italian Parliamentarians and regional representatives finally elected its President, Sergio Mattarella (80). He received 759 out of 1,009 votes even when he announced previously that he would stop after his first term. ALDE Party member, Più Europa, congratulated Mattarella for his second term but expressed that the election was a result of the failure of the centre-right and centre-left to reach an agreement.

ALDE's Individual Members electing Congress delegates

The nominations and endorsements are in - seven candidates will be on the ballots for the position of Congress Delegate for ALDE Individual Members. This year Individual Members will send two delegates to the ALDE Party Congress in Dublin. The online vote will be held between 7-13 February. Liberals honour the memory of victims of the Holocaust

On 27 January, the European Parliament held a special Plenary sitting in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. European Council President Charles Michel addressed the Chamber after an emotional speech by German Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer. ALDE Party Acting Co-President Senator Timmy Dooley also paid tribute to the memory of the victims reaffirming our liberal commitment to countering intolerance in all forms.

A new episode of the Renew Europe CoR’s podcast is out

The Renew Europe Group at the European Committee of Regions’ podcast Letter from Brussels begins its second year with episode 7, The Rocket and the Rock. This 15-minute episode, narrated by Renew Europe CoR Secretary General Sean O’Curneen, includes the following stories: the extraordinary precision of Europe’s spaceport on the launch of the James Webb telescope, the Royal Belgian Observatory’s mission in 2022 to crash into an asteroid and the inspiring and courageous Mayor of Cologne, among others.

Renew Europe defends Lithuanian sovereignty following China’s trade bullying

On 27 January, the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament strongly condemned the coercive measures applied by China to Lithuania and welcomed the European Commission’s decision to respond by launching a case at the World Trade Organisation against Beijing over its discriminatory trade practices.

Citizens' rights must be at the core of the EU

Ensuring EU citizens their right to be heard was on the European Parliament's agenda on 27 January as the Committee of Petitions (PETI) adopted two reports seeking to empower citizens and reinforce their ability to engage in the EU's decision-making. The Renew Europe Group stressed that all obstacles preventing citizens from fully exercising their rights must be tackled.
