ALDE welcomes Zelenskyy’s party to the liberal family

During an extraordinary Leaders’ meeting on 28 February, representatives from ALDE Party member parties proposed to grant temporary affiliate status to Servant of the People (Слуга народу/Sluga Narodu), the party founded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The ALDE Party Bureau adopted the proposal. Full membership of the party will be discussed at the next ALDE Party Council in Dublin in June.

ALDE Party Bureau meets with Ukraine Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna

On 2 March, the ALDE Party Bureau, together with Renew Europe Group MEPs, held a meeting to discuss the situation in Ukraine with the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna. She gave a first-hand update from Kyiv with high level information of the situation in Ukraine, the government and its citizens.

Standing with Ukraine the liberal way

After the start of Putin’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression on Ukraine on 24 February, ALDE Party and its members have taken action to condemn and punish the actions of the Russian regime and support Ukraine. From pushing for harsher measures against Putin’s regime and more support for Ukraine’s resistance to sending humanitarian aid, liberals are stepping up to the challenge.

Radicali Italiani holds its 20th Congress

On 25-27 February, Radicali Italiani held its 20th party congress in Rome. The party confirmed the election of Massimiliano Iervolino as Secretary General, Giulia Crivellini as Treasurer and Igor Boni as President. During the event, motions were passed to condemn Putin’s aggression to Ukraine and the enhanced cooperation with Più Europa was reiterated.

Summit of Regions & Cities will focus on Ukraine and Democracy in Europe

The biennial Summit of Regions and Cities, organised by the European Committee of the Regions, is underway in Marseille this week. It is the largest event of the French EU Council Presidency, with over 2000 participants and top representatives from the EU institutions and national governments. It will focus on how EU regions and municipalities can support Ukrainian refugees and Ukrainian subnational authorities.

Renew Europe condemns Russian aggression in position paper

On 1 March, the Renew Europe Group on the European Parliament released a position paper condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and stating that President Putin is a war criminal whose regime bears full responsibility for all its consequences. The paper supports the rapid and unprecedented measures adopted so far by the European Union but also calls for additional actions.

Lukashenka is no better than Putin: Renew Europe calls for strong EU sanctions

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament strongly condemns Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s regime for enabling Russia to deploy troops on Belarus’ territory and for actively supporting Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and calls on the EU to adopt and implement strong sanctions targeting all those responsible for these actions.
