1 December – Police for equality: law enforcement and LGBTIQ rights
Introduced by Sophie in ‘t Veld MEP, this webinar will explore how the EU can better promote safe reporting and prosecution of violence and hate crimes perpetrated against the LGBTIQ community in Europe. There is sometimes a lack of mutual trust and confidence between LGBTIQ people and law enforcement authorities, so hate crimes go unreported or unprosecuted. Stark differences exist among Member States in this regard. Some Member States’ governments and their police forces are actively seeking to combat anti-LGBTIQ hate crimes and restore trust of the LGBTIQ community in law enforcement, including by involving LGTBIQ police officers, whilst some Member States are not.
Within a Union built on shared principles and human rights, the EU should fight to mainstream this in police forces across the EU. Therefore, this webinar will explore what actions the EU is taking to restore the relation between law enforcement and the LGTBIQ community. It will identify further actions the EU should implement, including by taking an intersectional approach.
European Commissioner Helena Dalli will provide a keynote speech, and the event will be concluded by a Q&A session.
