In late November and early December, the Renew Europe Group at the European Parliament will host a range of webinars on topics such as combatting hate speech, LGBTIQ+ rights and ensuring accessible digital services. You can follow all these events online regardless of your location!
30 November – Combatting hate in a more polarised world
Hosted by MEPs Maite Pagazaurtundúa and Fabienne Keller, this event will focus on giving an overview of the situation of hate crimes and hate speech in the European Union and mostly to discuss how we can better fight against those phenomena, ahead of the European Commission presentation of an initiative to extend the list of EU crimes to all forms of hate crime and hate speech.
European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová will provide a keynote speech, and the event will be concluded by a Q&A session.
1 December – Police for equality: law enforcement and LGBTIQ rights
Introduced by Sophie in ‘t Veld MEP, this webinar will explore how the EU can better promote safe reporting and prosecution of violence and hate crimes perpetrated against the LGBTIQ community in Europe. There is sometimes a lack of mutual trust and confidence between LGBTIQ people and law enforcement authorities, so hate crimes go unreported or unprosecuted. Stark differences exist among Member States in this regard. Some Member States’ governments and their police forces are actively seeking to combat anti-LGBTIQ hate crimes and restore trust of the LGBTIQ community in law enforcement, including by involving LGTBIQ police officers, whilst some Member States are not.
Within a Union built on shared principles and human rights, the EU should fight to mainstream this in police forces across the EU. Therefore, this webinar will explore what actions the EU is taking to restore the relation between law enforcement and the LGTBIQ community. It will identify further actions the EU should implement, including by taking an intersectional approach.
European Commissioner Helena Dalli will provide a keynote speech, and the event will be concluded by a Q&A session.
8 December – Ensuring accessible digital services and platforms for persons with disabilities through the Digital Services Act
Hosted by ALDE Party Vice-President and Vice-President of the European Parliament Dita Charanzová MEP, the objective of the webinar is to discuss on how ensuring accessible digital services and platforms for persons with disabilities and to position Renew as a frontrunner in securing equal rights to all citizens in the digital dimension. In line with priority n. 5 of our “RE commitments to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities” (June 2020), they must be able to fully access online services and do so independently wherever possible. The webinar will gather MEPs, officials from the EU Commission and the Presidency of the Council, representatives of industry and persons with disabilities - namely the EDF / European Disability Forum - to share their views on ensuring a strong EU regulation for the benefit of all members of society.
