On 8 March, ALDE Party Co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP together with Liberal International President Hakima El Haité issued the following joint statement:

We, the Presidents of the ALDE Party and Liberal International, strongly condemn the violence towards peaceful protesters on the streets of Tbilisi, as a consequence of the government’s tabling of a Kremlin-inspired law that would require organisations that get more than 20% of their funding from overseas to register as “foreign agents.”

We regard these proposals as incompatible with European values and liberal-democratic ideals and a direct attack on civil society, on independent media, and free opinion in Georgia. We call for the immediate withdrawal of this legislation, which unnecessarily threatens the democratic development of Georgia and the country's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. 

We call for the immediate release of those detained in the protests, including Zurab Japaridze, the leader of our member party Girchi-More Freedom, who was detained and beaten while in detention and requires urgent medical assistance. We demand that the Georgian authorities refrain from further violence and respect the right to protest.

We stand with the thousands on the streets of Tbilisi, with President Salome Zourabichvili, and behind the desire of the Georgian people to seek a European future for their country. We regret that such government provocations seek to derail these aspirations and lead Georgia further away from EU Candidate status.

ALDE-სა და ლიბერალური ინტერნაციონალის ერთობლივი განცხადება საქართველოში მომიტინგეების მიმართ ძალადობის შესახებ

ჩვენ, პარტია ALDE-სა და ლიბერალური ინტერნაციონალის პრეზიდენტები, მკაცრად ვგმობთ თბილისის ქუჩებში მშვიდობიანი მომიტინგეების მიმართ ძალადობას, რომელიც მოხდა მთავრობის მხრიდან კრემლის მიერ შთაგონებული კანონის განხილვის შედეგად. ეს კანონი იმ ორგანიზაციებს, რომლებიც იღებენ თავიანთი დაფინანსების 20%-ზე მეტს საზღვარგარეთიდან, "უცხოეთის აგენტებად" დარეგისტრირებას მოსთხოვს.

ჩვენ ვდგავართ ათასობით ადამიანთან ერთად თბილისის ქუჩებში, ვდგავართ პრეზიდენტ სალომე ზურაბიშვილთან ერთად და მხარს ვუჭერთ ქართველი ხალხის სურვილს, ეძიოს ევროპულ მომავლს თავისი ქვეყნისთვის. ჩვენ ვწუხვართ, რომ ხელისუფლების ასეთი პროვოკაციები მიზნად ისახავს ამ მისწრაფებებისთვის ძირის გამოთხრას და საქართველოს კიდევ უფრო აშორებს ევროკავშირის კანდიდატის სტატუსისგან.
