Last week, the Secretary General of Liberal International (LI), Gordon Mackay, announced his decision to step down from his role to pursue new challenges as of 30 April 2020.
“It has been my deep honour to serve as your Secretary General and I am proud to be the first African to do so,” Mackay said in a letter announcing the news.
During Mackay’s mandate, LI achieved many things both alone and in collaboration with other organisations, building on the intellectual renewal and affirmation of liberal values as adopted in the Andorra Liberal Manifesto in 2017 with the founding of the Liberal International Democratic Training Academy (LIDTA) as well as the creation of the Political Start-up Incubator.
“In stepping down as Secretary General, I am not stepping away from the liberal family,” he highlighted, thanking partner organisations and individuals, such as ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen and Secretary General Jacob Moroza Rasmussen, for their valuable work and cooperation over the years.

We thank Gordon Mackay for all his work and wish him all the best with his next professional steps.
On 4 May, LI announced that its Bureau has appointed William Townsend as the new acting Secretary General. Townsend has been previously working as LI's Head of Communication & Political Outreach.
