Liberal family gathers in Vilnius at ALDE Party Council

Liberal leaders and partners gathered for the ALDE Party Council meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, to discuss key issues surrounding our political family.

Over the course of the two-day event on 21-22 June, hundreds of members will take stock of recent developments after the conclusion of the 2024 European elections.

Following a meeting of ALDE Party Bureau members, the first day featured various panel discussions around topical issues.

During a panel discussion on the future of liberalism in Europe, in association with the European Liberal Forum, speakers assessed new liberal narratives after the European elections.

“Liberals must stand for opportunities for all, defending individual freedoms, and economic growth. We should become the leading party in Europe,” said João Cotrim de Figueiredo MEP (Iniciativa Liberal, PT).

Later, liberal speakers explored potential solutions to enhance security and defend freedom in Europe in a debate co-organised with FNF, European Dialogue and ALDE Party member Laisvės partija.

“We must understand that the world is changing and we should take steps forward fast to secure our continent. At European Parliament level, we want a Committee on Defence and Security and more,” said ALDE Party Vice-President Dan Barna MEP.

Members were then welcomed to an immersive experience focusing on Ukraine, with welcoming words from ALDE Party Vice-President Kira Rudik MP and Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas and leader of ALDE Party member Liberalų sąjūdis.

The day concluded with the ALDE Party Council official welcoming reception held in Vilnius city centre, while the ALDE Party Council meeting will take place on 22 June throughout the morning.
