Liberal leaders discuss key issues at ALDE Party Council Meeting

The ALDE Party Council took place in Bratislava, Slovakia, on 2-3 December, bringing together the ALDE Party Bureau, member party delegates and liberals from across Europe.

Over the weekend, European liberals voted to welcome new members and adopted urgency resolutions on the main challenges facing Europe today. They also discussed the revision of the Stuttgart Declaration (the party’s founding document), and the work of the European Elections Manifesto Drafting Committee.

The ALDE Party Council issued the following statement on the creation of a strong liberal, centrist force:

"The ALDE Council remains committed to the goal of the creation of a strong liberal, centrist force with ALDE Party as the main pillar. We want to join forces for the European elections and beyond in a joint platform, or as a single party, with our partners in the Renew Europe Group, and new partners interested in joining our fight for a stronger EU. A joint platform will continue our cooperation in the European Parliament and Council and will make us more united in our efforts to build the Europe of the future. The discussions for a single party or a joint platform continue with the Renaissance party and other non-affiliated parties in the Renew Europe Group, and others are welcome in the process. Council agrees with the need to conclude such discussions by March 2023, in case the outcome requires statutory changes to be implemented that can only be agreed upon by Congress, and these consequently have to be tabled in time for the May 2023 congress in Stockholm - a year ahead of the European elections."

During the Council, ALDE Party welcomed Partia Demokratike e Kosove (Democratic Party of Kosovo) and Pokret Slobodnih Građana (Free Citizens Movement) from Serbia as full member parties and Acció per Andorra (Action for Andorra) as affiliate member.

Delegates also adopted a series of urgency resolutions on the war in Ukraine, Georgia's European future, the human rights situation in China and Iran and more. The adopted resolutions are available on our website.

Moreover, the ALDE Party Bureau launched the revision process of the Stuttgart Declaration. The Bureau appointed Vice President Baroness Sal Brinton to steer the process and called on member parties to nominate representatives for a standing committee to assist her. Delegates also had the opportunity to meet with Brinton and discuss the process in more detail.

Delegates also received an update on the drafting of the Manifesto for the 2024 European Elections. After kick-starting the process earlier this autumn, including consultations with member parties, the Drafting Committee will continue its work in 2023 through expert workshops and town hall meetings.
