On Monday 3 December, the ALDE Party hosted the second Transport Pre-Council meeting of this year, bringing together liberal Transport Ministers and the European Commissioner ahead of the Council of the European Union’s Transport Council meeting. In addition to the two Pre-Council meetings, ministers also met in September for a Ministerial Coordination meeting, hosted by ALDE Party.
The meeting was chaired by Timmy Dooley TD, ALDE Party Vice President and Fianna Fáil’s Spokesperson on Communications, Environment & Natural Resources, and was co-hosted by the Czech Minister of Transport, Dan Ťok.
The Ministers discussed and shared views on the items on the Council agenda, with the main focus being on the First Mobility Package, a key reform package for the road transport sector. The package includes drivers' working conditions, special posting rules for drivers in international transport, access to the haulage market, and improved enforcement. Negotiations have been ongoing since the package was put forward in May 2017, and at the Council meeting later on Monday, Ministers from the Member States came to an agreement on their general approach – a key success for moving the package forward.
