Liberalerna name their lead candidates

The Swedish Liberal party Liberalerna held its party Council on 15-16 February, during which the party elected its candidates for the upcoming European elections.

Swedish MEP Cecilia Wikström was elected as the lead candidate, followed by a former Swedish MP Said Abdu.

Following her nomination Wikström stated: “I am honoured to lead the Liberal campaign in the European elections. We will run a positive campaign that focuses on the opportunities that EU cooperation entails. When other parties choose to talk about what the EU should not do, we will propose concrete reforms that will enable the EU to meet the challenges of the future even stronger.”

The party leader Jan Björklund emphasised the importance of the EU elections, stating that he sees them as the most important elections since Sweden joined the European Union in 1995.

Talking of his party, he said, "It is only our party that wants more European cooperation. To those who are negative to the EU, we have a message: Vote for someone else! Liberals want more EU cooperation.
