Liberals welcome new member in Vilnius

On 21-22 June, liberal leaders and partners from all over Europe gathered for the ALDE Party Council meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Over 200 participants took part in the two-day event as our political family untangled the results of the 2024 European elections and discussed topical issues in our agenda.

Members were addressed by European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, who announced his candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe earlier this year.

“It’s very important to work together on a common European space of values and continue to modernise the system of the European Convention of Human Rights. We are the most efficient political family to promote the values of rule of law and human rights; they are part of our DNA,” said Reynders.

Delegates welcomed Georgian party Droa! as a new affiliate member of ALDE Party. Droa! (translating to “It’s time!”) is a liberal, centre-right party formed in May 2021 by Elene Khoshtaria, former Deputy Minister of the State Ministry for EuroAtlantic Integration of Georgia.

The party stands firmly for a European, democratic Georgia that is free from Russian influence and occupation, advocating for the rule of law, freedom of speech and expression, and the protection of minority rights.

Two member parties upgraded their membership from affiliate to full: Girchi – More Freedom (Georgia) and Acció (Andorra). Click here to scroll through our updated list of member parties.

Three urgency resolutions on the need for sustained military and political support for Ukraine, the authoritarian and anti-European turn in Georgia, and political prisoners in Russia. All resolutions are available on this page.

“There are very few liberals and democrats worldwide fighting for our values. In our new group of MEPs I see hope: you are those who can teach the world that we have people with human values,” Liberal International President Hakima El Haite told members as she closed the Council meeting.

Members and delegates will gather next at the upcoming ALDE Party Congress on 4-6 October in Estoril, Portugal.
