Liberals welcome President Macron’s victory

On Sunday 24 April, French citizens headed to the polls for the second round of the Presidential election and elected Emmanuel Macron for a second term, making him first President to win re-election in twenty years.

In this second round of voting, President Macron secured 58.5% of the vote, comfortably defeating the nationalist-populist Marine Le Pen, who scored a record-high 41.5%. President Macron sought to frame the run-off as a choice between the European Union and values such as freedom, secularism and the rule of law.

His re-election was welcomed all across Europe and especially within the liberal political family.

Commenting on the election result, ALDE Party Co-President and Senator Timmy Dooley said: “The French people have chosen hope over fear. I congratulate President Emmanuel Macron on his re-election. There is much work to be done in the next five years: from making sure Europe is capable of defending itself against foreign threats to making sure we are doing everything to help our Ukrainian allies. We must also work together in transitioning away from fossil fuels that help our adversaries and harm our planet.”

ALDE Party Co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP added: “On behalf of the ALDE Party I want to extend my warm congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his re-election. The French President can count on our support in the European Parliament to continue the fight for a more sovereign Europe. Only together can we ensure the EU becomes a global player. Only together we can renew Europe.”

The legislatives elections will take place in June 12 and 19.
