Luxembourg elections confirm Bettel’s coalition

On Sunday, citizens of Luxembourg were invited to renew their parliament. Defying recent polls, the coalition parties of the so-called Gambia coalition led by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel managed to keep their parliamentary majority and have agreed to continue their cooperation.

Despite excellent personal votes for Xavier Bettel, ALDE member Demokratesch Partei lost one seat. Their LSAP coalition partner lost substantially, mirroring results in other parts of Europe for social-democrats. The Luxembourgish Greens managed to increase their support. The opposition Christian-democrat CSV remains the country’s biggest party, but lost seats.

Xavier Bettel said: “The voters have moved things around internally in the government, but they have confirmed us.

On Tuesday, the Grand-Duke of Luxembourg invited Xavier Bettel to establish a new government.
