ALDE Party member Momentum Mozgalom in Hungary launched an initiative to improve the country’s single-use plastic bottle recycling system and reduce pollution.
The website visszavaltjuk.hu aims to connect people who have a pile of plastic bottles with those who are available to return them to a recycling machine.
Hungary’s plastic recycling system, operated by oil and gas company MOL, presents many operational issues and Momentum hope to offer an alternative to those severely impacted by them.
"For example, if you have a restaurant, pub or nightclub, and you produce a lot of these empty bottles, sign up and we'll put you in touch with a receiver who will do it for you,” said Momentum leader Márton Tompos.
“Beyond that, we'd also like to help NGOs. If you register, you can generate a QR code for yourself, which the machine will scan and transfer the return money to you.”
On 21 September, Tompos delivered hundreds of single-use bottles in front of MOL’s headquarters to draw attention to the issues.
