On 29 November, Mouvement Réformateur (MR) – one of ALDE members in Belgium – elected Georges-Louis Bouchez to lead the party. In this role, he replaces Charles Michel who started his mandate as the new European Council President on 1 December.
As none of the five candidates for the party leadership received the necessary number of votes during the first round of 12 November, the second round was held between the two emerging top candidates: Georges-Louis Bouchez and Denis Ducarme. With a campaign supported by the Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès and securing 8640 votes that translates into 62%, 33-year-old Bouchez will lead the party to the new decade. He will also be the party’s youngest ever leader.
“It’s impossible to describe the emotions of this moment. As a child, nothing prepared me that one day I might become the leader of MR. Coming from a modest, politically inactive background, this is the result of hard work that knows no bounds,” Bouchez said after his election.
“Today is the beginning of a new chapter for our Movement. Today, we are on the road towards free and progressive society. Let’s be audacious and let’s be optimists as there is no bigger failure than that of not even trying.”
