Musavat Party

Party Leader: Arif Hacılı

Founded in 1911, Musavat Party is the oldest political party in Azerbaijan, and played a key role as the ideological motor behind the foundation of the first democratic republic of Azerbaijan in 1918. Due to political persecution during Soviet rule, the party’s activities were interrupted until it was reignited by members of the popular movement against the Soviet Union in 1992. Led by Mr. Arif Hajili, the party is the main opposition party in Azerbaijan. Its key goals include protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, creating a free society based on free, liberal market principles, equal rights for all and transparency. To achieve these goals, Musavat believes that free and fair elections, accountability of central and local governments and all constitutional rights (freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and gender equality, to name a few) must be fully safeguarded and respected. In terms of foreign policy, the party supports European and transatlantic integration, regularly participating in discussions regarding the EU’s Eastern Partnership project. During snap parliamentary elections in 2020, Musavat participated with 60 registered candidates for 125 districts. As a result of mass fraud and undemocratic electoral procedures, highlighted by various international organisations, it failed to obtain a parliamentary seat.
