After months of political deadlock, ALDE member party in Kosovo AKR has joined the new government in Kosovo with leader Behgjet Pacolli assuming the role of First Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Ahead of the parliamentary elections held on 9 June, AKR had signed a coalition agreement with LDK of former leader and Prime Minister Isa Mustafa and Alternativa, but together they failed to win a majority, as did the other major coalition list lead by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK).

On 4 September, after months of political stalemate and with a desire to form new institutions as soon as possible for the betterment of Kosovo, AKR decided to end its coalition agreement with LDK and join the coalition of PDK and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), the Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA) and the ethnic Serb party, Sprska Lista. This move gave the new coalition a majority of 63 of the 120 seats in the Parliament with which they were able on 9 September to elect a Speaker and form a government.

In this new government, AKR Party leader Behgjet Pacolli will serve as Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. AKR will also hold the Ministerial posts of Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning and the Minister of Internal Affairs, and many deputy ministers.

In a statement Pacolli said that AKR’s stance after the June election was that Kosovo needed a broad-based coalition: “AKR insisted on a broad-based coalition between LDK and Vetevendosje in order to form majority in Assembly” but reaching such an agreement proved to be impossible. “Kosovo has no time to lose and should form new institutions as soon as possible. AKR has decided to support the [PDK] nominee for Prime Minister, in order to form new Government, and bring the political and institutional crisis to an end, without creating new trauma for the citizens of Kosovo.”

Ministries which will be headed by the AKR will be efficient, successful, and will give tangible results”, he added.

In a letter of congratulations to Pacolli, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP wrote: “I look forward to seeing the new government of Kosovo taking office shortly and for the ministries headed by AKR ministers produce results for the citizens of Kosovo as it continues its path towards European and NATO. In this endeavour, you can count on the support of ALDE.”
