ALDE Party President officially opens Council meeting

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP

On Saturday 3 June ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP officially opened the ALDE Party Council in the Grand Union Hotel of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Hans van Baalen MEP initiated the ceremony spreading a message of hope: "One year ago it seemed that European citizens were suffering a European fatigue, but the great results of Liberals in Austria, the Netherlands and France have been the right antidote."

ALDE Party President also shared the good news that former Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas will be leading the process of drafting the ALDE Party manifesto for the 2019 European Parliament (EP) elections.

The core of the speech of Miro Cerar, Prime Minister of Slovenia and SMC leader, was on the importance to focus on citizens: "Liberalism is about the right values, building bridges and creating stability and prosperity for the people."

"We must be future oriented, we must respect and protect democratic values, our progress must keep a human face," Cerar added.

In his speech, Bart Somers, President of the ALDE Group in the European Committee of the Regions (ALDE-CoR), emphasised the power that local governments have to reshape democracy and enhance citizenship. Somers also insisted on the fact that "the foundation of Europe is based on Liberal values of equality, freedom of speech, rule of law and democracy."

Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport, said that politicians need to be daring to change projects that don't work or that are not efficient enough: "Liberals have to dare to invest and lead the way. Europe is currently under-invested and we are full of opportunities. Inclusivity should be at the core of solutions."

The final speech was delivered by Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg and Demokratesch Partei leader: "The best way to fight populists is to say the truth and to stick to and stand up for our Liberal values."

Bettel also addressed the fact that all European Union institutions are currently led by the European People's Party (EPP) or the European Socialists (PES).
