Since 1 July, Estonia holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time.
This means that Estonia, under the leadership of ALDE Prime Minister Jüri Ratas, is responsible during 6 months for defining the Council’s positions while taking into account the interests of all member states and remaining neutral at the same time.
On 5 July, Jüri Ratas presented the priorities of the Estonian EU Presidency to the plenary session of the European Parliament:
- An open and innovative European economy
- A safe and secure Europe
- A digital Europe and the freedom of movement of data
- An inclusive and sustainable Europe
Summarising the key topics of the Presidency, Ratas said: "Our Presidency is prioritising the creation of an innovative, European social market economy that is open to changes, opportunities, free and fair trade and original ideas." You can read his full speech here.
The motto of the Estonian Presidency is '"Unity through balance." Find out more about their events and programme on the Presidency's website or take a look at the exclusive interview with the Prime Minister of Estonia for the ALDE Party's magazine Liberal Bulletin here (pages 7-10).
