Earlier this week, the Hungarian parliament adopted a new set of changes to the country’s constitution. European Liberals expressed their concerns and believe this fourth amendment to the Hungarian constitution clearly breaches the values of the European Union. This week, the Liberal Group in the European Parliament raised the issue in plenary in Strasbourg and Group Leader Guy Verhofstadt called for an urgent parliamentary debate.

On Tuesday, Guy Verhofstadt, the Leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament said: "It is time to finally see the Orban regime for what it really is - a government set on imposing the will of a majority over a minority and in so doing going against the values of the European Union."

"In parallel, I call on the Commission tomorrow during its weekly College meeting to take immediate action and begin an assessment of the changes. The Heads of State and Government must also raise the matter with Orban at their scheduled summit meeting this coming Thursday and Friday in Brussels."
