Meet the new Dutch government

After several rounds of talks, four parties under the leadership of ALDE Party member VVD have agreed to govern together. The other ALDE Party member D66 is now part of the government too, as well as the Christian-democrat CDA and the Christian-Union. Mark Rutte remains Prime Minister of the Netherlands – and is one of the seven Prime Ministers in the EU that belong to the growing ALDE political family.

Hans van Baalen MEP, ALDE Party President: “ALDE looks forward to work with the new Cabinet under Prime Minister Mark Rutte in which both liberal member parties VVD and D66 have a strong position. Mark Rutte will continue to play a key role in the European Council and in our Pre-Summits. May this inspire liberals to unite!”

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said: “At last we can get to work. This establishment of this government took a long time. It was not easy to find enough parties that wanted to go into a government. These four parties are willing to take that responsibility. We have talked a lot lately, because we wanted to make good arrangements. But while it is sometimes good to talk, I love to do more. That is why I am very pleased that there is now an agreement that we can get started.”

Political leader of D66, Alexander Pechtold said: “This coalition agreement will bring the Netherlands forward. It's full of ambition. It connects progressive and conservative. And it is an agreement for the whole of the Netherlands. We're narrowing the differences between poor and rich. We’ll make the biggest investment in education in years. We'll achieve the Paris climate goals. And a permanent job will be possible again. I feel like getting started!”

In the new government, VVD will have 6 ministers and 3 state-secretaries, while D66 will have 4 ministers and 2 state-secretaries. VVD’s parliamentary group will be led bij Klaas Dijkhoff and D66’s parliamentary group will be led by Alexander Pechtold.
