MEPs call for faster deployment of off-shore renewable energy sources

MEPs respond to the Commission communication “An EU Strategy to harness the potential of offshore renewable energy for a climate neutral future”.

Parliament voted to support a report that calls for the shortening of permit procedures for offshore renewable energy development, and to introduce time limits where necessary. They highlighted faster development of this infrastructure is necessary to meet the 2030 and 2050 targets.

ALDE MEP Morten Petersen states “The offshore renewable energy strategy is key to the green transition, where time is of the essence. We need lots of green electricity to fulfil our climate objectives and the offshore renewable energy strategy is absolutely essential in this regard"

The net-zero emissions economy requires renewable energy production to be deployed at a unprecedent scale but many member states falling behind in the switch from fossil fuels. As a technology lead in this sector, the report highlights member states could expect a significant economic boost through this quicker development, with a unique opportunity to mobilise capital through the NextGenerationEU recovery fund.
