Statement on the Parliamentary Election in Hungary

Commenting on the result of the Parliamentary elections in Hungary, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP has reaffirmed ALDE Party’s strong support for the liberals and democrats which are in opposition in Hungary.

He said: “Momentum and other ALDE partners such as Liberálisok courageously campaigned for an open, democratic, pro-European Hungary. We congratulate Anett Bősz of Liberálisok on entering Parliament.”

“Viktor Orban’s party Fidesz won an absolute majority of 134 seats in an illiberal political climate. However, the true liberal and democratic forces and individuals will carry on their democratic and peaceful fight for Hungary supported by ALDE. We will be watching developments closely and we will continue to oppose and speak out against any further destruction and restriction of democracy and the rule of law in Hungary under Orban’s rule.”

“We are convinced that following the 2019 European Elections, ALDE will welcome MEPs from Hungary! Let us go forward together!”
