ALDE Party press release

Over three days from 19 to 21 November, Liberals and Democrats from all across Europe will meet to discuss the shape and direction of European Liberalism. Today the location of the 2015 Congress has been announced - Budapest, Hungary.

Making the announcement following an ALDE Party pre-summit meeting ahead of the European Council in Brussels, Sir Graham Watson, President of the ALDE Party, said: “for some years European Liberals have been concerned at the developments in Hungary, the declining state of fundamental rights enjoyed by its citizens, and the state of democracy and the rule of law in the country – a member of the European Union since 2004.

Following Prime Minister Orbán’s proclamation in July 2014 that he was seeking to build an illiberal state, and the recent by-election in Veszprém that saw a liberal candidate win the seat and remove Orbán’s supermajority in the Hungarian Parliament, now is an opportune time for European Liberal Democrats to meet and continue to reclaim Liberalism and give hope to Europe’s citizens.
