European Liberal Democrats are appalled with the renewed clampdown on Human Rights defenders in Azerbaijan.
“The detention and continuous harassment of internationally renowned Human Rights defender Leyla Yunus and her husband has been unacceptable and is only the latest piece in the yearlong suppression of the country’s voices of freedom”, declared ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson MEP.
“I have just requested the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy to immediately address this matter with the Azeri regime. It is outrageous how the government acts shortly before it is supposed to assume the chairmanship of the council of ministers of the Council of Europe, Europe's top human rights body. We must speak out, take action and not allow Azerbaijan to get away with it in the wake of the Russian aggression in Ukraine”, concluded the President of the European Liberal Democrats.
