ALDE Party press release

For European Liberal Democrats, civil liberties and freedom, including freedom of speech, form the foundations of a liberal Europe. Commenting on yesterday’s appalling attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson said:

“As Europe knows from its own history, intolerance and definitions of true faith lead to social and economic misery. As Erasmus showed, tolerance and respect for those of different beliefs is the only sustainable way forward for society. In today’s global village this is even more important.”

This is not the only occasion when liberals have defended freedom of speech. In a letter published this week in the European Voice, Sir Graham expressed his deep concern regarding the ongoing violations of fundamental rights and the breach of rule of law in Turkey:

"For two years the press, the political opposition, the judiciary and the business community have shivered as the rule of law, the separation of powers and fundamental rights have been questioned. Growing intolerance of political opposition, public protest and a free press is now a matter of grave concern to those who see a future for Turkey as a liberal democracy in Europe.”
