Liberals leading the way: ALDE Party, first legally recognised European political party
Formed as the first European political family in 1976 ahead of the first European elections and the first to be established as a true transnational political party in 1993, the ALDE Party today became the first to be legally recognised under European law as a European Political Party.
Registered as a European Political Party on 4 May 2017, the ALDE Party had operated until then as an AISBL association according to Belgian law.
ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP commented: “I am delighted at the news that the ALDE Party has been accepted and officially recognised as the first legal European Political Party. While it may be just a small legal point that will not affect our ongoing work for liberalism across Europe that is reflected now in our highest level of participants of Prime Ministers at the European Council, this is an important step in recognising that European Political Parties play an increasingly important role in the development of European politics. I am pleased that once again the European Liberals are leading the way.”
