Two nominations have been received: Guy Verhofstadt MEP, leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament and Olli Rehn, European Commission Vice-President and Commissioner for Economic and Monetary affairs.
ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson said:
"I have known Olli Rehn and Guy Verhofstadt for many years and I am pleased that both have ambitions to be the ALDE Party candidate."
"Europe badly needs fresh impetus and a new direction. I am convinced that either of these two will provide that. The European Liberals have the right solutions for creating jobs and growth in the EU and either of the two nominees would be a great champion for the liberal cause in the upcoming elections."
“As Liberals, we are not afraid of democracy. We are lucky to have two extremely well-qualified candidates in the frame, either of whom would do an excellent job as President of the European Commission. I look forward to our electoral meeting in Brussels on the 1st of February, where we will formally elect our candidate. This will be the start of a rigourous election campaign in the run-up to the European elections in May. Open debate and argument can only be of benefit to Europe’s 500 million citizens.”

Under the terms of the Lisbon Treaty, the results of the European elections can form part of the decision-making process for the European Council when it is appointing key members of the European Commission.
